Summer Recap: I can not believe how fast the summer has gone, but here we are at the end of it. We have studied the depths of the ocean to the expanse land of farming. Water days were a blast and Bubble Mania was an exciting exploration of the science of bubbles. We had a petting zoo come to the school as well to finish up our farming unit and got to see and touch all kinds of animals. In our last week of camp, we discussed fitness and how it benefits our bodies, with lots of fun exercises and ways to move and stretch to make our bodies strong and healthy. This summer has been a blast, full of non-stop fun! I am excited to keep the momentum going as we move into the coming school year.
September Recap: This month has been jam-packed with exciting activities! We have been focusing on getting to know one another and classroom rules this month, as well as, learning all about what makes us similar and unique. We have been reading about emotions and the way we treat each other has a profound effect even if we cannot see it on the outside. We have been learning the different parts of an apple, as well as, the life cycle of an apple. Our Enrichment Programs have been so much fun. In art class the children have been learning about Jackson Pollock, we’ve worked as a group and created beautiful masterpieces. In music, they have been learning about Johann Sebastian Bach. We have been listening to his music and talking about the different instruments we hear, as well as, learning to play music together like an orchestra. Cooking class has been full of wonderful snacks that the children have been able to create and enjoy. They are learning about the nutrition value that we consume to have energy to play and learn. Hopefully the children can teach the parents some of the recipes and they can try it at home. The children are also enjoying computer and Spanish classes, how exciting!
October Recap: In October we became astronauts and explored our solar system! We learned about; the sun, the 8 planets in our solar system (that we know about), dwarf planets, asteroids, comets, etc. We have had so much fun learning all about space! Our Enrichment Programs have been so much fun. In art class the children have been learning about Frida Kahlo and have been creating art that reflects what they have learned. In music, they have been learning about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. We have been listening to his music and talking about the different instruments we hear, as well as, learning to play music together like an orchestra. We’ve even included scarf dancing and bells to our music routine. Cooking class has been full of wonderful snacks that the children have been able to create and enjoy at school or at home. The children are also enjoying computer and Spanish classes, how exciting!
November Recap: Last month we dove deep into discussions about virtues and values. We read many books about how-to best deal with conflict and treating one another with kindness and respect. We have read How Full is Your Bucket and the children have been practicing filling each other’s “buckets” with acts of kindness. Our Enrichment Programs for November have been a hit! In art class the children have been learning about Andy Warhol and have been creating art that reflects what they have learned. In music, they have been learning all about jazz. Cooking class has been full of wonderful snacks that the children have been able to create and enjoy. The children are also enjoying computer and Spanish classes where they are learning about the seasons and about North American animals and farms.
December Recap: In December we toured the globe as we learned Celebrations Around the World! We learned about Hanukkah, Diwali, Kwanza and how other countries celebrate Christmas. Oliver (the elf) has been watching our classroom as we work and occasionally gets up to mischief himself. The children have been having such a good time finding out what Oliver is up to during their nap time. Santa paid us a visit as well this month. Check out the school Facebook to see a sweet picture of your child and St. Nick. Our holiday performance was a success! The children did such an amazing job and I am so proud of all of them. We hope you had a wonderful winter break and a happy new year.
January Recap: In January our thematic focus was winter, snow and ice. It was very exciting for the children, especially since many of them got to learn and “experience” snow for the first time, and how it needs to be very cold for snow to fall. We learned that when it is winter in the northern hemisphere, it is summer in the southern hemisphere and visa-versa. In this topic, we also learned about Antarctica and the animals that live there. We learned about Tundras and how animals survive the most brutal winters, when there is little to no food (camouflage, hibernation, migration, etc.). It really was a blast to learn about the winter season!
February Reap: In the month of February, we focused our attention on Friendship and Cultural Awareness. We discussed what friendship is, how to be a good friend, and how to work through conflict. The children also learned about Dr. Martin Luther King and our Presidents. As part of cultural awareness, we talked about where our families originated from and found those places on the map. We also learned a lot about Asia, what types of animals live there and where the continent is located on the map. We greeted one another by saying hello in Mandarin (Ni hao), Hindi (Namaste), and Japanese (Konnichiwa). We had such a fun day on Valentine’s Day! We loved having a friendship potluck and giving each friend a valentine was a highlight of the day. What a fun month filled with love and kindness!
March Recap: In March we celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss. We had so much fun dressing up to celebrate an amazing children’s writer this month. We really enjoyed learning all about Africa as well. We learned about Africa’s different biomes and the animals that live there. We learned about some different traditions and cultures in Africa. We even learned to greet one another in a couple different African languages. What a wonderful and exciting month of learning! For enrichment the children learned a lot about the African cultural, in art they created wonderful art projects that have a significant cultural meaning. In cooking the children made African dishes, in Spanish they learned the names of African animals and played charades. In music they got to use African instruments, sing and dance to African music. The children also continued on their ABC Mouse learning path.
April Recap: Our planet Earth is so cool!! We learned about volcanoes and how they create islands. We learned the parts of a volcano the children enjoyed learning about the different types of volcanoes, and that some volcanoes are even active under water. We learned that our Earth has 4 layers; inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust [ask to hear the song]. We also learned that we need to take care of Earth as she has taken care of us. Learning about Australia has been so much fun. We learned about the Aboriginal people and about their paintings and musical instruments. You may have seen some of your child’s own interpretation of some Aboriginal art coming home. We learned about boomerangs and we even got to see and feel one. The children also had lots of fun for the egg hunt, they made bunny ears and baskets to collect the yummy treasures. What a great month!
May Recap: May was such a fun month, the children learned about whales, migration, and South America. We learned the meaning of migration and how some animals need migration for survival. The children studied about metamorphosis, we were lucky to have seen our caterpillars morph into a chrysalis and then into a butterfly. It was so exciting to watch! We also learned about the continent of South America; all its countries, some of their flags, and the animals and plants, this included the world’s biggest rainforest, the Amazon. Mother’s Day was a wonderful celebration that all the children really enjoyed being a part of. We all hope that all the Moms felt loved as we celebrated you!
June Recap: June has been such a fun month for everyone, the children learned all about community helpers. We studied about doctors, nurses, police officers, firefighters, dentists… the list goes on. We also talked about the state where we live. We learned about the state flower and what the California flag looks like, one of the month’s project was to have the children make their own flag. The children were taught about the Californian terrain, climate, animals, and plants. The children had lots of fun learning about swing dance, Spanish words, and special cooking projects for the month. We had an amazing time at the Father’s Day celebration. The children were so excited to perform a few songs for their dads and to give them the gift that they work so hard to make. We hoped all that were able to come had as good of a time as we did.
Summer News: Summer camp is here, and we are so excited!! We will be celebrating our country’s birthday in the first week of July. We will be exploring the deep sea all the way to outer space and everything in between. We will be having some amazing in-house field trips as well, Bubble Mania, the Birch Aquarium and even a magic show. We are going to have an amazing time, please remember to apply sunscreen in the morning, we will reapply in the afternoon.
