May News

May's theme is Dinosaurs; we focus on the African continent and learn about their culture.

Our book of the month will be The Very Hungry Caterpillar, tied to our Lifecycle of a Butterfly discussion. We are revving up for the end of the school year, and we are reviewing all the letters we've learned thus far. We are excited to see all our special moms for our Mother’s Day Celebration on May 10th! We are working on a special gift to share with you during this event.

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held May 14th and 15th where I will be available to meet with any parents who wish to discuss the classroom, their child and set some goals for the rest of the school year and summer.

It will be a busy month but we are excited to see what May brings!

April Recap

April's theme was Our Planet Earth & Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, &Pacific Islands). The children learned about Australian animals like the Kangaroo and Koala bears and Australian Landmarks. We painted some colorful aboriginal rocks and created earth art with a coffee filter and butterfly symmetry art. We did a fun activity to take out our shovels and our gardening skills and plant sunflowers; we are very excited to see them sprout!

As we continued studying and talking about taking care of our Earth, we brought in plants so the children could enjoy learning how to care for them.

The book we read was Chicka Chicka Boom Boom which is about the alphabet going to the top of a coconut tree.

We made a Chicka Chika Boom Boom Tree in Enrichments out of apples, graham crackers, and raisins. We learned about the musician Mozart and all his beautiful pieces of work. In art, we created Aboriginal projects; our favorite was creating rainbows on rocks and adding them to our rock river. In Spanish, we introduced the letters' p, q, r, s, and t' and learned how to say the different weather words.

March Recap

March's theme was Rainforest and South America; we talked about the Rainforest. We read books about the Rainforest and were able to see pictures of animals that live there, like toucans, macaws, poison dart frogs, and tarantulas. We discussed which animals live there and why they are unique to their ecosystem. In Practical life, the kids practiced their fine motor skills and worked on activities that included little spooning, pouring-dry, small tonging, and pouring water. This month, some of our art was Dr. Seuss-inspired art, a hot air balloon with a Dr. Seuss quote, "oh, the places you will go." The kids also made snack bubble wrap paintings, like the snakes found in the Rainforest. We ended the month with lots of St. Patrick's art. Our letters of the month were w,x,y,z, and we read several Dr. Seuss books this month.

February Recap

February was a month filled with love! Our theme of the month was Cultural Awareness and Friendship. The kids learned that there are different cultures and that we are all different in unique ways. We also talked about how we make friends and how to keep them. To help with the discussion, we printed a coloring page that shows how friends play together, be kind, share and help others. Our book of the month was Little Blue & Little Yellow, two best friends who can’t find one another, and when they finally meet, they are delighted. The children and I talked about President George Washington and Abraham Lincoln to learn about President’s Day. The kids worked on China cleaning, tongs, polishing, and dry pouring in practical life. They also practiced the letter sound of their first name.

For art, the kids colored an Asia Map and created a beautiful colorful friendship tree; all the kids contributed by stamping their fingerprints with the color of their choice. They also had fun preparing everything for Valentine’s Day. They each decorated their own valentines mailbag to place their goodies. The kids had a great time exchanging valentine’s day goodies. The kids also made a lot of valentine’s art throughout the month.

January Recap

Our theme in January was Winter Animals and Hibernation. The kids learned about Hibernation, what animals do after hibernation and what animals prefer in the cold weather. This fits perfectly with our book of the month, the Mitten, by Jan Brett. The book is about a little boy who loses his mitten in the snow, and some animals find it thinking it’ll be a good home. This month, some of our art was Animal art habitat; for this, we made a cave in the winter with a bear hibernating inside. The children also painted animal tracks in the snow. In language, we practiced phonics o,p,q,r. They were the perfect letters to practice as we used polar bears, penguins, and orca whales as examples.

In enrichment, the kids had a fun time in cooking class, and their favorite snack was making a necklace. In Music, they were introduced to Beethoven and rhyming “Hey Diddle” to a beat. In Spanish, we reviewed numbers 1-10 and sounds a,b,c,d. For Science, the children experimented with colors and ice cubes; we painted over the ice cubes and let the water determine the outcome. It was enjoyable, and the children enjoyed their creativity.

December Recap

In December the children learned about seasons and holidays. They learned about Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas. Letter sounds for the month were l, m, n.

Our Christmas art was very fun and colorful. We made lots of holiday decorations like stockings, snowflakes, Christmas stamping, reindeer, gingerbread, Christmas trees. Our book of the month was the Giving Tree, which teach the kids the lesson on value. To value what you have and not take and take from someone.

The children had fun with our enrichment activities this month. In cooking they made snowman bananas and reindeer celery. In Spanish we practiced holiday vocabulary and colors. The children also spent a lot of time rehearsing for their holiday performance which they really enjoyed.

November Recap

We had much fun learning about the Harvest and Healthy Bodies theme in November. We continued to review the letters I to K of the alphabet. Throughout the month, we focused on healthy foods and the traditional foods that are associated with the holidays. Our major theme of the month was To Fill a Bucket Empathy Program by Tom Rath and Mary Reckmayer. In Geography, we reviewed the map and globe of the United States. Finally, we discussed Thanksgiving and the traditional meal we make every year to celebrate togetherness and gratitude.

October Recap

October was an exciting month for our students! We explored the changes that come with the new season of Fall, including the weather and the beautiful colors of the leaves. To celebrate, we created a fun leaf hunt activity using our handprints and orange, red, and yellow paint. We also did a leaf hunt around the playground, looking for dry and colorful leaves. Our book of the month was Going on a Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger. Our students continued to practice their alphabet through interactive songs, dot art, and daily recaps. We also focused on emotions and used scenarios to help students recognize and express their feelings. We read a book about spooky monsters and how they felt different emotions based on the behavior of their friends.

In our Spanish enrichment class, we reviewed the five senses and created a "potato body" activity where students glued on eyes, mouth, nose, hands, and ears. In music, we listened to "The Carnival of the Animals" by Camille Saint Saens, and described how the music made us feel. For cooking, we made delicious apple donuts using sliced apples, cheerios, strawberries, and yogurt. Finally, our students got creative and made their own Picasso-inspired art by placing eyes, nose, and mouth on their pumpkin's art. It was a fun and exciting month for everyone!

September 2023

September recap: Welcome back to school! Now that the new school year has begun and we are returning to our school routines, we start the curriculum with our theme, All About Me! We began by learning about our school and classroom, how to use the materials, and how to keep them nice and tidy. We learned about our families, what makes a family, and how all families differ. We also discussed friendships and how to be patient and gentle with our friends every day.

We discussed all seven continents and looked at maps and our globe to locate all the

continents. We learned how each continent is color-coded, a system we will use throughout the school year in our Montessori work. We looked at pictures of the various cultures and animals that vary from place to place.

Summer 2023

Summertime was so much fun! We got all the tastes of summer, from water days to magical bubble shows and the always exciting Carnival to kick off the start of a new school year. We learned about sea life, outer space, and life on the farm. We loved our In-House field trips: Magic Dana, Police, Radical Reptiles, and Friends, and we ended with an end-of-summer Carnival. This was a great way for our families to get to know one another and our littles to have fun!
